that if we are going to do anything about finishing early, it would be best to do it

tomorrow and people can get home, but there are limits to what we can bring

forward. What I would like to suggest if you are all right with this and, in

particular, if the moving bodies are all right with this, is that we bring forward

items 29 (that is motion 10 in the name of the Musicians Union), 31 (which is

motions 7 and 8 in the name of the Bakers Union) and item 32 (which is motion

9 also in the name of the Musicians Union). So after tea we will deal with items

29, 31 and 32. Back here at 20 to four.

THE PRESIDENT: What I am proposing that we do now is those motions that I

referred to earlier. If we finish those motions and it is not yet 4.30 I propose

that we stop at that point. Is that all right? (Agreed) I just think we can bring

forward too much in a sense, but if we deal with those motions that I indicated

just before the break, which means that the first motion we are going to deal

with is motion 10 in the name of the Musicians Union on music co-ops.

MOTION 10 – MUSIC CO-OPERATIVES

SIS BARBARA WHITE (Musicians Union) moved the following motion:

The Musicians’ Union (MU) released its third report into the state of

music education in England in 2016. The report highlighted that yet more

instrumental music teachers have lost their jobs or left the profession due to

worsening terms and conditions over the last year. MU members also

highlighted their concerns about the inconsistency of music education provision

across the country due to the varying attitudes of schools and head teachers

towards music.

Instrumental music teachers faced with redundancy or worsening terms

and conditions have, in some areas, been setting up co-operatives and

independent trusts. These appear to be working very well and are examples of

how high quality, accessible and affordable music education delivered by a

committed and skilled workforce can still be provided. The MU is a member of

Co-operatives UK and is providing advice and assistance to MU members who
