job that you do and move on to different things. The only way that we are
going to help our colleagues and our members who pay our jobs and keep us
all where we are is to have a pathway to education, to have a pathway of unity
and a pathway to shared services and I just want to finish on this and say that if
we all link together and join together we can make our services for our
members better for the future, more fit for the future and, to quote our slogan,
we need to belong to be strong and on that I thank you very much for your
time. Cheers. (Applause)
THE PRESIDENT: Thanks very much, Glyn. The next item on the agenda, given
what we have just changed, would be Motion 2 on the ‘gig’ economy in the
name of Community.
MOTION 2 – SHARING THE ‘GIG’ ECONOMY WITH ALL
BRO ROBERT MOONEY (Community) moved the following motion:
Conference notes that the ‘gig’ economy can and should be fairer and
acknowledges the role trade unions have had in securing that in recent months.
Conference believes that the ‘gig’ economy can play a pivotal role in providing
a path back to work for those who struggle to gain access to traditional
employment such as new parents or disabled workers.
Conference notes Uber’s new partnership with Lingoing that aims to attract a
greater number of deaf and hard of hearing partners onto the Uber app and
takes advantage of the use of accessible technology.
Conference believes that the systems operating in the UK to support traditional
employment, whether through employment law, tax systems or the welfare
state, contradict the needs of ‘gig’ workers and ‘gig’ employers and further
excludes those who struggle to access work. Conference believes it is crucial
that trade unions engage with digital platforms such as Deliveroo to make
meaningful and timely interventions that provide fairer working conditions.
