The GFTU moved from its London base in 2014 as part of a policy objective to become less reliant on investments in the financial markets. The objective was to own a resource that would create jobs and also be a home and training centre for trade unionists. As well as the full range of busy commercial events, the Quorn Grange Hotel hosts some 30 unions for their meetings and training. The GFTU has expanded the hotel by 25 rooms and built good quality housing on site for rent. There is planning permission on site also for another building if needed. In recent years the GFTU has successfully developed work on youth engagement in unions, arts and cultural work and refreshed the theory and practice of trade union education as well as re politicising the trade union education curriculum and restoring greater knowledge of working class history and economics. We are leading the way on rebuilding connections between trade unions and community organisations also. Recent new trade union affiliates to the GFTU have included the Communication Workers Union and Equal Justice the Union. There is considerable scope for recruitment into the GFTU from many of the trade unions that exist. The archives of the organisation are retained at the Bishopsgate Institute in London and reach back to 1899. The successful applicant will demonstrate an excellent understanding of and commitment to the trade union movement, have a good leadership record, a commercial sense and sound administrative and financial experience and be able to work effectively with a wide variety of unions and committed colleagues on the GFTU governing bodies. They will be able to demonstrate a vision for the organisation to build on its strengths and take it forward to a new period of development. It is hoped that the post-holder would make a long term commitment to building the GFTU. The GFTU has played an invaluable role in helping unions form, grow and develop.
