The hidden history of how the British people fought for a thousand years for freedom, justice and equality https://peopleshistoryhub.org.uk/ The People’s History Hub is a 2-year digital media project to create the ‘go to’ public education resource for exploring the history and heritage of the working class struggle for liberty, democracy and social justice in England and Wales. John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer says about the hub: “Working class struggles are too often written out of history because the establishment fears that they will inspire current and future generations to demand change. This project will not only record the history of our movement, it will inspire the next wave of campaigning for a better future.” Online, the Hub will act as a central access point for people’s history material. It will be made up of ‘subject-albums’ which will display text, images, infographics, tailor-made, bite-size, video documentaries and links to other online resources that tell the story of historical events such as ‘The Suffragettes’, ‘Peterloo’, ‘Tolpuddle’ or ‘The Peasants Revolt’ and the biographies of important historical figures such as John Lilburne, Mary Wollstonecraft and Eleanor Marx. Groups of subject-albums will also be grouped into collections under broader subject headings such as, ‘The History of Parliament’, ‘The English Civil War’, ‘Trade Unions’, ‘anti- Slavery’. The Hub educational Outreach Programme will use the Hub as a jumping off point for an extensive programme of volunteer-led face to face classes, workshops and events aimed at a broad popular audience but focused on the under thirty fives and at democratically disadvantaged groups. The Outreach Programme will use history presented on the PHH to frame discussions of contemporary democratic citizenship. We will work with a team of 11 Regional Outreach Organisers to develop and present these classes and events. In the long- term we would like to see a national network of volunteer-led People’s History Groups that discuss, research and advocate for this history at the regional and local level.

The Project Aims to: • Create and curate a comprehensive online collection of historical digital resources including texts, images, media and links. • Use the online collection to advance public education, learning and knowledge about the history of the UK working class movement to achieve democracy, equality and social justice. • Use the online collection as the basis for an extensive face-to-face, educational Outreach Programme offered to schools, universities and civic society. • Use the online collection and the educational Outreach Programme to encourage active, participatory, democratic citizenship. • Create a national network of volunteer-led People’s History discussion, research and advocacy groups. The People’s History Hub is currently sponsored and supported by: • The Working Class Movement Library in Manchester • The Tolpuddle Radical History School

• The Sheila McKenchie Trust • The GFTU Educational trust

• GMB North West • UNITE Education • Dr Michael Sanders of Manchester Uni

• Dr Keith Gildart of Wolverhampton University • Dr Lee Humber of Ruskin College Oxford • Professor John Newsinger of Bath Spa University We hope to go into production of the digital content in the autumn of this year, with a pilot of the Outreach Programme in Summer 2019 with a full launch for the academic year 2019/20.
