GFTU BGCM Minutes 2017

unscrupulous boss you should fear the Labour manifesto, but if you are one of

the millions upon millions of ordinary working people, you have got nothing to

fear and everything to gain from a Labour Government and that is why I urge

everyone in this hall to support our motion so we can go out of here and have a united front, a united front that says that between now and June 8 th everybody

will put their shoulder to the wheel to make sure that Jeremy Corbyn becomes

our Prime Minister.

So much is being said that he is unpopular, that he cannot win an election.

They said the same of Labour in 1945. The Tories were so cocky that Winston

Churchill, having beaten the Nazis, thought that it was a foregone conclusion,

that it was a foregone conclusion that they will take power, but what did Labour

do? Labour went out and campaigned and campaigned on a programme of

change. We have had two economic settlements in this country. We had the

1945 Attlee settlement which created a fairer society. We then had the

Thatcher counterrevolution and we are still paying a heavy price for that. This

is the time to turn the pendulum in our favour and put like Labour did in 1945, in

1945, a new economic settlement that works in the interests of everybody in

our society and not just the rich. This is what is at stake. No wonder, no

wonder that the media who is owned by billionaires is attacking Jeremy

Corbyn. No wonder that everybody is telling is that he cannot win.

But we have very cute people running the Labour Party. When you look at our

policies individually they have all been tested, we did not write this manifesto

out of thin air, and each and every one of those policies has the overwhelming

support of the British people, every single one of those policies. Bringing

energy back into public ownership is supported by over 50%. I repeat that,

over 50% of Tory voters. Getting rid of zero hours contracts, 71% of all voters

support it. I could go on and on and one. These are the kinds of policies at the

core of our manifesto. Our job is to turn the debate around. Stop talking about

Corbyn, whether or not he is a good or a bad leader and start talking about the

policies, the policies that will transform our country.

Comrades, I urge you to support our motion. (Applause)
