Hotel Directors Meeting March 2020
Emplaw on-line and the GFTU working in partnership…
Aim
The GFTU have been asked whether the organisation is interested in taking on “Emplaw online” as a business and this paper provides information on the product and explores a number of possibilities and asks the Executive Committee to decide on its preferred choice, to either buy the business and run Emplaw on-line as a successful business or step away from the opportunity.
Background
“Emplaw online” ( https://www.emplaw.co.uk/ ) is an on-line portal of accessible, well researched legal information owned by Claire Perry and her husband, Ian, trading as Constantia Associates Ltd ( Company number 05972339)
There are 2 distinct parts to the Emplaw on-line product, the first element is a databank of hundreds of up-to-date, on-line ‘law cards’ covering the full spectrum of employment law issues from recruitment to rights at work to termination and subsequent claims. All law cards are hyperlinked to relevant cases and legislation (having started in the 1990s, the Emplaw system holds thousands of case summaries). The second part is a Monthly bulletin designed as a one stop read to keep subscribers up-to-date with professional summaries of current cases, legislative developments and employment news and both require regular research and updates. As the information is available over the internet it is a very useful resource, especially when people need information “out of hours”. Emplaw have been a Win:Win partner for a few years and although the uptake by members has been slow, the people that were provided with log-in details in the Autumn (Ian, Doug, Oshor and Sarah Wooley from BFAWU) have been positive about the service. Emplaw also provided log-in credentials to the General Secretary of the GFTU’s Affiliated Unions in December so that they could assess its usefulness and provide feedback. To date this feedback has been limited.
