Hotel Directors Meeting March 2020
11 CSP
A report on charges made to CSP was requested to ensure that they have been charged the correct rates. This is awaited. Why is this important: CSP is a regular user, it is not GFTU affiliated, it should be, getting a sense of how affiliation would benefit them is important and also scotching the rumours that the CSP although not an affiliate gets favourable treatment would be important.
Tim has provided a summary of the corporate rate tariffs which is attached for information.
6/3/20: Tim confirms he has done this.
12 Unionisation.
It was said by Tim that he would join an appropriate union and that a new way would be found of getting staff to understand that they should too would be found. The latest date given for this was December 31 st 2019. Ian and Tim discussed unionisation of the site at a meeting with Sarah Wooley at Quorn on 16/1, it was very productive and Sarah will communicate direction of travel with Doug initially and then we will establish a Leadership branch and Team branch through BFAWU, Tim has the membership form to join and we will arrange a branch meeting in the next 2 weeks.
Tim was going to join Prospect however he has decided to join BFAWU to provide leadership.
Ian will remain in Unite, the recognised Union for the GFTU, so that he can remain impartial on HR matters affecting the Hotel.
The lack of unionisation amongst staff damages our reputation.
Inevitably bar staff in the evenings are most likely to be asked about unions and all should be fully briefed on the reality which is that the Employer recognises and encourages all staff to be in a union and has a full recognition agreement. We may need to consider a sign somewhere to avoid unnecessary questions to ill-informed staff. Why is this important: One of the motivations originally for buying the hotel was to enable GFTU Education to be placed at a unionised hotel rather than a non unionised hotel in the private sector. Being in a union is better than not and having a union presence at the hotel would assist. 6/3/20: Tim and Ian have met with Sarah and a colleague from BFAWU, we then did 2 recruitment sessions and several staff, including Tim have joined. Branch meeting being planned currently with BFAWU support.
13 SMT Meetings and Minutes.
The Directors requested regular SMT meetings and notes of them.
It is recognised that there are daily operational meetings and weekly Heads of Department meetings, but unless there is a strategic leadership opportunity, there is no possibility of taking the hotel forward.
